This shell is all that is left after the bushfire that went through the district in the 1980's, it made it into our backyard

Not bad. There is balance with the tree. There could be more contrast/light on your subject.

I should be posting something similar later today to demonstrate.

Yeh, it just feels flat to me. I think there's so many things of middling interest that I don't know what to focus on. Need some light somewhere or something to give it more dynamism.

I think more frontal lighting on the structure would be best. The sunlight is too broken on your subject. This looks like a picture taken at sunset; I would shoot early and/or a different time of day. It might also help to get a bit closer if you can.

hehe tough call...the angle I choose is because the walls you see are the only complete ones on the structure... the other sides are crumbling...closer I can do...
