will the megapixels war ever end?
probably not

This camera isn't so much about megapixels as it is about dynamic range. Though, unless it spits out an OpenEXR all that dynamic range will be pretty worthless.

And because photographers don't seem to be interested in OpenEXR, I'd be pretty surprised if it does.

I Second the Fuji. It's a digital camera that actually feels like a camera.

I was lucky in that I picked up a Fuji X-Pro 1 body for £160 and a 27mm [ 41 in old money ] for £150 .
It has an optical and electronic viewfinder which is excellent .
I second the Fuji , but you may look around for a X-Pro1 deal .

I'd go for the Fuji XT-2. It checks all the right boxes. I saw some videos on YouTube testing the pre production unit and I'm really really excited for it. I think the autofocus would be the best ever in a mirrorless body.

Suit yourself. I'm not holding my breath for that one. Megapixels alone are not image quality.

probably not

Of all the parameters ruling image quality, Megapixels are the least interesting. Have 12 Megapixels and you're all set for 98% of applications.

By the way, we had 40 Megapixel smartphones a couple years ago already.

Both FF Sony and Fuji X series are way beyond the stated $2,000 budget limit. We are talking about $5,000.
If that is not the problem,I would definitely go for FUJI X-T2. Otherwise a used FUJI X-T1 is worth considering.
