Since when was perfect balence a necessity to art?

There is nothing that is a NECESSITY to art.....=) but balance can make or break a composition. Balance creates an easy to look at feel. I believe that the op wants this to be a calming shot......but they can correct me if I'm wrong.

Well of course there is no NECESSITY to any art... look at Duchamp for instance Although there are some good guidelines to an "appealing" composition, but that's all BS anyway hahaha
No no I was just getting at (vaguely) the fact that I liked the way they broke up the symmetry. Its a good photo CAN WE ALL AGREE ON THAT

I've really enjoyed the back and forth on this thread, and the great pointers and tips. I am definitely going to keep playing around with the tree photo, I actually probably have about 20 taken, and none of them seem to really get what I was trying to capture, but you have all given me some things to mentally chew on when trying to make this perfect.

And in regards to the baby, I was fairly close to her. I took a variety of shots that day, and got some looking straight at the camera, but I always try to throw some profiles in there too. I have noticed I have a tendency to get too close to her and I need to back up. No wonder I keep getting shots with missing limbs
