C&C on B&W conversion

*WARNING* Gun included in the picture.

I took this picture while I was fine tuning my exposure, I wasn't really watching my composition so I know there are aspects that could have been better (all of the gun in the picture, truck door in the background...). BUT there are a lot of aspects I loved which is why it made it to editing. Anyway I was hoping for some C&C on the black and white conversion. Thanks.

Not much punch to this.
Honestly, this is not much of a shot for a BW conversion because that which makes a b&w interesting, tonal contrast, moody shadows, just isn't there.
Pick a better one.

? I think there's plenty of tonal contrast. Well not in the upper left background area, but in the subject yes.

It seems appropriate for B&W. However... it just isn't a very interesting photo. It's a dude killing time by a car *shrug*

And IMO it also looks kind of silly to be hauling a gun that large around which makes me roll my eyes a bit on top of it all, unless he's about to go engage an armored truck convoy and/or bull elephant or training to do that. And if he is, I would have much rather seen actual images of the convoy / elephant / engagement versus the smoking break and/or training beforehand.

You seem to know this guy, so the photo is interesting to you, that's all that matters in this particular photo.
It seems a little dark to me. I raised the overall brightness and sharpened a little. I would like to see the color version

I can't comment on the conversion process itself, because I wasn't given a reference point of the colored version.
So all I'm able to comment on is the photo itself, which I'm saying has decent contrast and abstract visual qualities for a B&W photo, but uninspiring / possibly anti-inspiring content.

I would say the same of a picture of a well executed contrasty dude sitting there normally eating a sandwich at Jimmy Johns, or of a chair on a porch, or of a random tree in a field.

Guess I should have added that I don't need/want any comments regarding the type and/or size of the gun. Here's me rolling my eyes, all I asked for was opinions on the conversion. I don't have a lot of experience with BW and this me learning.

I think I'm leaning towards the color on the shot. For me any way, there needs to be a reason for shooting in B&W. In this photo, I think the colors actually work for you. Don't get turned off by the snide gun comments. It's a diverse group. I personally enjoy popping cans down range with my M&P 15, others don't understand it. It's society. With that I'll leave it alone. Nice photo BTW. Your shooting buddy should frame it.

Maybe "weird" wasnt the best choice of words. The background is sort of unflattering, BUT, i do like your conversion very much as it shows the different tones nicely. The AR is a nice platform, i have a M&P Sport. What new handgun did u get??
