First time trying to do Night time Photography, and WOW a lot harder then I thought it was going to be. This was taken without a tripod, so forgive me. any advice or thought are greatly appreciated.

I like the idea, but I'd have done two shots. One with the moon in clear focus/exposure and one with the lantern in proper exposure.

The concept is interesting but executed poorly.

Since the moon is blown out here and it seems your shutter was a good speed for the lantern, you probably need to take a shorter shutter on the moon. Then, layer the photos in photohsop and you may achieve the look you were going for.

I like it but that shot is going to be very difficult to do without braketing and HDR or a graduated neutral density fitler. You could probably darken the moon in post processing but the detail is gone. If you want detail in the moon you have to treat it like a daytime shot and not a night shot.

I thought the same way for many years and was very proud of the quality images I was able to get by just using the cameras functions and settings, then I used Lightroom and saw its power and potential and in a month I completely changed the way I shoot subjects. Best of luck!

Use the tools at your disposal, especially when you encounter a technical issue that can be logically solved by said tools

Nice shot for no tripod. It takes a lot of time to get to know night time shots so just keep doing it and it will get easier.

Do you really think all the great prints you've seen in the past were accomplished without some darkroom manipulation? Many of the tools available in modern image manipulation were placed there to emulate tools that those familiar with darkroom work were accustomed to working with. Dodge, burn, crop, color correction, and others got their start in a darkroom.
