To be honest, this seems like a very basic 'Mommy snapshot'. Between the on-camera flash, horizontal crop and slight over-exposure, it doesn't have a lot of redeaming qualities as a portrait, but as a keepsake image of a child? Priceless. Consider using a diffuser on your flash if you don't have the ability to use off-camera lighting, and when shooting portraits, try the vertical/portrait orientation. As well, get down to your subject's eye level rather than shooting down on them.

this was basically a snapshot... I was practicing with the diffuser, I just purchased a bracket and was looking at the differences between on and off flash, with and without the diffuser. This is with the flash on and the cloud diffuser bounced off the ceiling. Her eyes just popped, but you are right.

You may want to dial down your flash output, or put a flag in between the flash and the subject as there are still very distinctive catchlights in the centre of each pupil, a dead giveaway that on-camera flash was used.

That's a beautiful child... Aside from what's already been written, I feel that the eyes are overly sharpened. Was this done in post-processing, or are the child's eyes extraordinary?

Not my child... Her eyes are extraordinary. I dodged them very slightly. NO sharpening.
