I think you overdid the HDR effect in that first shot - that area in the top right where you can tell it was blown out, and yet it appears gray... that totally takes me out of the shot.

The island is very centered, with the horizon bisecting the frame, and the poor swan is missing it's feet and tail, so I'd say that composition would be a good thing to concentrate on improving. Generally speaking, sticking to the rule of thirds helps out a lot.

Do you have the unedited version of the first shot? I'd be interested in seeing it.

Thanks,
Im not sure about the grey that has been blown out, what does blown out mean ?

I do realise I have to work on framing now youve pointed it out

Would you like me to email them or post them here ?

Just post them here. :)

"Blown out" means it was brighter than the sensor could capture properly. Basically it's just another way of saying "overexposed." In a scene like that one it will tend to happen to parts of the sky because the camera is metering the whole frame which is mostly darker.

oK mate will do. Im at work at them minute, so will post them later

Thanks

When an area is blown out, it is shown as pure white. Pure white to a computer means zero data (all detail lost)

Most DSLR's will have an option during review that will cause these areas to blink alerting the photographer. Search here for "blinkies"

In the first one I would have used a flash to illuminate the foreground a little better.

In the second one I would have applied the rule of thirds for a stronger composition.
