Well, they're well focused and the lighting isn't bad.

Watch your backgrounds- lots of distracting stuff behind your subject can ruin a shot.
Don't bother with cute processing tricks. Work on all the basics and play with tricks later (if you still want to- and generally I'd advise you not)
Generally don't dead-center your subject... you're not TOO bad on this, but in a couple cases.
Generally try to avoid landscape on portraiture.
Make sure anything you see in the frame somehow contributes to the picture, and cut out anything that doesn't. (CROP!)

This was all intentional and meant to be as documentary photography to capture how some people live. That's why there is that background and landscape orientation in portrait

Harshness is because of their harsh living conditions. Do you think I went to far?

I see a computer...granted it's an old 386 with a floppy disk drive.

your last photo in the first post is closest to this, but imho none of these capture this. pushing the structure/contrast up like you did isn't helping here and it's coming across as trying too hard.

If the harshness was intentional than I'd say it fits the theme. Honestly though it doesn't read super "poor". Kids socks get dirty and worn all the time. The BG doesn't read anything but a little cluttered.

Maybe I am skewed because most kids in maine look like that and have houses that are similar.

I guess not having a computer when I was a kid it doesn't really hit that hard for me. The coloring and process are good. Just work on the setting.

I didn't have a computer either and I'm glad, because we played much more outside.

You are posting the same pictures in multiple threads. That is generally frowned upon.

I personally like the second photo posted the best. It's clean and the boy has a good smile.

I know bigger picture of their situation and I am not objective at all with this pictures. That is why I asked for your opinion.
two parents without jobs and three kids. The third kid was in school when I photograph this.
I deleted photos from the other thread.

oh setting...

#10 was my very first visit and I hope I showed their living conditions.
with #1 familly it was hard for surrounding because their house is new (donation) they have that room and a kitchen. the kitchen wasn't useful because there were not enough light for any decent photo. so we went in bedroom.
I must submit some close ups of children in a very good mood, because they say, that kind of photos attracts donators, not the sad ones. !!.? so I played as they said.
now I'm confused... what did I do right and what did i do wrong!? not necessarily asking you guys, but myself >(
