Is this some sort of waterproof/waterproofing membrane?

In the #1 photo it has holes/openings in at least two locations.

I think those are leaves trapped in the ice.

@OP - What was the goal of the post processing. Did the PP bring the image closer to true tones?

It's more interesting in #2 but I am wondering if the ice should be more like snow - meaning less blue...

Much closer to the true tones but I intentionally made it a little darker blue. I thought it added aesthetically.

I do like the darker blue to accentuate the patterns.

What about the picture as a whole?

On the positive side, it is well balanced, good eye-flow with leading lines and is well unified. As good as it is in these regards, it is not a compelling image for me. For me it lacks a subject. I get that the subject is the texture in the ice, but it seems more like a supporting element rather than the object of interest.

As a whole I guess you said it...its a picture; worth a thousand words and one that leaves us guessing.

As a photo, many of us aspire to achieve to hear seldom offered words; Only a very few deserve the language of Wow.

I am not looking for a wow. I know it definatelely doesn't even deserve a that looks good. I am more interested in the composition.
