Digging around, I've come to the conclusion that photobucket certainly wasn't helping me out any in the image quality department... I'll post an example below of the exact same image uploaded to photobucket, then the one I uploaded to flickr.
I've changed my setup around just a bit. Since I do not have a boom, a hairlight was beginning to look like something I wouldn't be able to rig up. What I did was take a piece of 3/4" conduit and put a 5/16"x2.5" bolt through the middle and attached a bracket to mount my metz flash. I put an umbrella on it for now until I get a softbox for it.
In this picture I used an umbrella to the left and a 24x36 softbox to the right, as well as my diy hairlight. Obviously, his hair is a bit messy, but with mommy being out and about today and his unwillingness to sit still for more than 3 seconds at a time, I did the best I could with what I had to work with.
Any thoughts as to whether I've interpreted the suggestions and applied them correctly? Thoughts on what else could be improved in this image? Overall, I think this is leaps and bounds better than the previous two thanks to the suggestions here, as well as some more in-depth reading I've done in based on the suggestions offered.
