What do you think? Crop out a bit of sky?

-Compaq :)

Just my own personal preference, but I'd like this more if the bird wasn't there. I can see why some people would like it though.

The sharpness of the water and the sun's reflection is what makes this shot, in my opinion. Although I'd like to see more definition in the clouds.

Nice shot. I was just fooling around with it, and the scene benefits from a crop of the top and the left side so that the bird is moved a bit toward the upper left corner. I'll post if you want.

By all means, go nuts :)

I agree a cropping of the sky just a little bit would make it stand out more. It's a beautiful scene and there is too much 'blah' cloud cover at the top that takes away from the sunset. Great shot!

Thanks! I can crop a bit and see what it looks like.

At least I got the horizon straight, that's new :P

And thanks for all the comments adversus, MohaimenK, freezeman and syco.

I love this site, getting feedback. I'm still a newb at photography, and you are helping me a lot by coming with constructive criticism and opinions. You are great tools ;) good tools, of course :)

Not a big difference, but I think this cropping puts the bird in a better spot...

Agree that Syco's cropping improves the shot, but the top cloud cover is generally too heavy in this picture. If you ignore the bird for a while and cut horizontally just under it you'll get a much better picture overall, but then the bird aspect goes away. You could always photoshop the bird into the non-cloudy section, but how much manipulation do you really want to do here...

How about a little light tone mapping, HDR-style...

Check the tree line and upper right corner. It's getting scary purple there :| Anyway, thanks for ideas. Next time I witness a lovely sunset and seagulls fly all over the place I'll think a bit more about the placement of the bird

btw, I still have a tiny weeny seagull closer to the water left of the sun reflection. Man, you have no idea how long I planned having that life form in that very spot. ;)

I don't see that on my monitor. I tried to keep the purple trees to a minimum. When I used detail enhancement they looked like they were on fire.
