C&C Two JFK Plaza (LOVE Park), Philly shots

I don't think these came out too bad for my first day of shooting on my D80, which is my first dSLR. I tried doing manual settings today, but my pictures were coming out whitewashed, so I just used Auto for everything. I have a few more I'd like to share, but I didn't want to put too many in one thread. Shot on a Nikon D80 with a 18-55mm 3.5-5.6GII ED DX Lens. Any C&C is appreciated!

1.) The background is a bit distracting, maybe move over a bit so the fountain is in the background of the love sign/sculpture thing.
2.) Im not a big fan of the weird angle, and its a little too busy. Is the focus supposed to be the sculpure or the fountain with the people?

In the second picture, if you could have gotten a shot of the (what looks like) an old man, with the kids in the background it'd give a sense of contrast between different age groups. i.e. lonely business man on his lunch break from the office v.s. care free school kids not realising how valuable their youth is

Both are nicely exposed however! I like how well you've got the sky and foreground both well exposed in the first one.
