Camera Comparison

Dear Photo Forum,
I've got a quick question about my cameras. I've had a Sony NEX-5R Mirror less camera as an intermediate camera during my years in my high school photo class. It's served my needs rather well and I love the layout of all of it's functions. I recently started a digital photography workshop, and initially when I asked if I could use my mirror-less camera, they said no. So I went out and bought a Cannon Rebel TI3 EOS 600D for the class. I like the Rebel, but I'm not a huge fan of the layout, and the Sony is lighter. I've since found out from the instructor that I could use my mirror-less camera for the class.

It seems to me that the NEX-5R and the Rebel TI3 EOS 600D are very comparable in quality and features. As such, I'm thinking about returning the Rebel. Am I right in assuming that the Rebel is about comparable to the NEX-5R? Or is the Rebel a significant upgrade, and I should just continue on with this nicer camera?

A lot of that is going to depend on what you shoot. Really the two only real advantages of the T3I would be a little bit better low noise at high ISO abilities and the fact that you have a whole lot more choice of lenses to work with, but if you don't need the much wider lens selection then odds are good the sony would do the trick for you just fine. My only other thought would be the external flash, I have no idea how good the one for the NEX-5R is or if it would be sufficient, again an advantage of the T3I would be you'd have a lot more options for accessories like the external flash.
