Camera for beginner?

Panblue mentioned a nikon D70 ...I have this camera that I use for all my "old" Nikon lenses and it works great. Under $200 on ebay and with that you could build on to with good glass upgrades and then step up to something more professional I don't use cannon because I started with Nikon a long time ago so look into Cannon as well

Your best bet is to head to a good camera store, tell them what you are looking for and the price range. See how the camera feels when you are holding it, if it feels good in your hand then consider that one, if it doesn't feel right, it never will.

I agree, you better ask directly to the camera store and you can try out the camera before buying. Seller will give you advice as well teach you how to use a camera that they recommend.

Ask your friends who have experience in the field of photography or understand about the camera technology to accompany you to go to a camera store. Sometimes sellers simply give an explanation the advantages of their product, not what you need. With the purpose you be interested and willing to buy their products only.

D3100, D3200, D5200.
Those are all really good cameras to start with.

You can use any DSLR to start, but most people choose a Canon or Nikon because they're the easiest to find and have the largest systems. The camera body is just one tool you will need. Lens(es) and lighting will be more important than the body.

A DSLR for 400$ ?

You can get a Nikon D3100 for 399$ its a great starter DSLR it will give you all that you need and more!!!
I would not get a used camera if I can get a new one, why risk it if you get a new camera with a 2 years warrenty ?
