Camera lenses

Im getting the cannon t3i for christmas ofcourse the 12-55mm lens comes with the kit, anyways i was wondering if it would be worth for me to get a 55-250 or a 75-300 lens with that, i understand that high mm lenses are for zooming/portrait photography but is there more too it? and is it worth spending the extra 150$ that's what both the 55-250mm and 75-250 cost

personally, i would wait. perhaps save up and get a lens with a wider, constant aperture. the two options you mentioned arent bad.. its just that i find their apertures too small for lower light shooting without a tripod difficult. sure you could crank the ISO, but noise isnt what you want..

I guess it depends on what you want to do. I knew I wanted a zoom lens and a prime lens. I just happened to get the zoom lens first.

The 55-250 is a much more solid lens and has IS.

EDIT: by solid, I mean all around decent lens, not "Solid" as in built like a tank.

I think it depends where you are at and where you want to go. My Xsi kit three years ago came with two lenses (18-55 and 70-300).

They have been doing the job all this time. Now that I am getting more involved I realize how much room there is for improvement.

I would encourage you to have a longer lens but if you are truly just starting the "kit" versions are more than adequate for now. Then with time you can decide where to invest next.

Taking a picture of a house because it's the only thing in line of sight to test a zoom lens is creepy?

18-55 + 55-250mm lenses are great start. They will give you loads of scope and cover many situations, and learn where your gear needs improvement so can make educated decisions to whether or not your lenses need upgrading (all in good time of course). Both are really good lenses for the money. If you could find the money for a 50mm f1.8 or nifty fifty lens at some stage it would go a long way to improving your low light and portrait shots also.
