Okay thank you very much for your response. will read up about aperture and shutter speed. just a simple last question, if by raising the ISO and lowering the aperture to a small f/ number doesnt give me enough light, what do i do? i tried going ISO to about 800 and my aperture to about F4.5

If you are at ISO800 and your aperture is already maxed out (smallest number), then what you can do is to make the shutter speed slower. If your shutter speed is already too slow, then the only thing you can do is higher the ISO or add extra light!
