what am I doing wrong???

I believe you have the
Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DT SAM and Sony 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 SAL

These 2 lenses are zoom lens with variable maximum aperture. When the focal length is set at the shortest (i.e. 18mm in 18-55mm lens or 75mm in 75-300mm lens), the maximum aperture size you can set are f/3.5 and f/4.5 respectively. (lower the f/#, wider the aperture). However, when you zoom to a longer focal length (i.e. 55mm in 18-55mm lens and 300mm in 75-300mm lens), the maximum you are allow to set changed f/5.6 on both lens. You are no longer able to set the aperture wider than f/5.6 (i.e. lower number than 5.6). And it is the lens properties that you cannot change in your camera.

However, if you get this lens : Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G SAL-70200G, you should be able to set the aperture to f/2.8 (widest aperture the lens can set) from 70mm all the way to 200mm. But lens like that usually cost more.

Not bothering to make the effort to understand what the numbers on your lenses mean.

I guess when it says NOOB in my profile it means nothing to some a-holes.....Its almost a nicer experience to google your questions that ask them here.....too many smart asses with smart ass answers......

Should make two new topics on this forum

NOOBs with real learning questions -and-
Know it all's with douche bag answers

Then we would all know where to post our questions.
