I'd say both...I mean, if you try to compare it to the a7 that you're thinking of, everything about it is so ridiculously better that it seems kinda mean to compare...like you're picking on the little guy (if Canon could ever be considered "the little guy.") But even if you compare it to another APS-C, like the XT1 or the a6000, they literally beat it in every category. It can't compete with low light, autofocus, dynamic range, etc. The only advantage it has is the touchscreen.
Now, I'm not saying it can't take good pictures. As beagle100 had repeatedly shown, it can. There really are no "bad" cameras these days, just a lot of bad photographers. But when you're looking for a camera that can handle any situation you might come across, it falls short in comparison to other companies.
