So I purchased a battery grip for my Canon XTi camera and with the kit lens or my 50mm 1.8 lens it sits up correctly. But if I put on my 17-85mm lens (much longer and heavier) the camera falls forward. So, instead of having all the weight of my camera on the battery grip, some of the weight is on the grip and some of the weight is on the lens since the camera is leaning forward.

My question is... is this safe for both the lens and the camera? I'd assume it would be safe as long as I don't let the camera fall forward and the lens smacks the table. But as long as I'm resting it down carefully each time it shouldn't be a problem right?

Shouldn't be a problem...but it's not ideal, if only because if anything or anyone falls onto the camera while in that position...it might damage the lens mount area.

OMG TEH MOUNT WILL FALL OFF!!!!!!NO!!! DON'T DO IT!!! OMG!!!!!

Seriously, you're fine, you can hit the side of the lens while it's on the camera and it will be fine.

It's designed to take abuse (to an extent, of course)
