Can you shoot a family of 4 with 1 flash studio setup??

My family needs a family portrait done desperately. I tried, and failed using 2- 1000 watt softboxes and 1-1000 watt softbox on a boom stand. It just wasn't enough light, even at ISO 1600. I honestly can not find a GOOD affordable photographer in my area, so my options are a) buy a used speedlight and try again or b) head over to portrait innovations.
Edit: I will also have a huge wall if naturally lit windows to use as fill light.
I would love some imput!

Yes. You can. I photographed a family of 8 using an SB-910 bounced off the ceiling at ISO 1600.

I agree with Big Mike.. you just need a nice overcast day... or be care to shoot in some non-dappled open shade. Shouldn't be too hard this time of year.

Getting a flash and learning to use it is ALWAYS a good idea, though! Constant lights are terrible for photography... except for long exposure product photography or still lifes. (unless you buy Hot Lights... but good ones are not cheap!) Flash is better....

I would really prefer a studio shot, and I won't drag my Muslims outside. ( besides the fact it's a good excuse to finally get a flash) ;-)

anyways I always say that a good flash is a must have because I find myself in more situations where I need more light than any other piece of equipment
