canon 50mm f1.4 as product photography?

Yes. But in most cases you will want to stop it down so you can have the whole product in focus.

Can you tell us the type of products that you want to take? Small item like a diamond or big item like a car? Or some where in between?

i need it for plates of food for immediate work. i'm also looking at the sigma 50mm macro f2.8 for $270

Well in most menus i see there is a very small DOF which is center on like the fork piercing into something. The f/1.4 will be good for this. What other equipment do you have? Off camera lighting would be a GREAT help
