Canon 580Exii

Hi,

I've been lent this by a friend for a trial as im looking to get a flash gun.
Ive had a 3rd party cheaper version when i first started my photogrphy,but it broke in 3 days of having it.

What that flash had,was the ability to flash by the on camera flash,if the sensor was pointed in a direction where it would pick up flash,does anyone know if the 580ex has this ability?

The 580 can be a slave to another 580 with line of sight firing through infrared.

Some Canon cameras work with the 580EXII in that manner and even send ETTL info to the 580EXII (7D comes to mind, and I think the new Rebels also).

For those Canon cameras that don't have the ability, there are always radio triggers. They can be had from less than $50 a set for the ebay triggers to the more expensive Radio Poppers and Pocket Wizards.

A third alternative is the Canon ST-E2 Commander, which sits on top of the body and communicates with Canon flashes. It's a couple hundred bucks.

Flash Photography with Canon EOS Cameras - Part I.

This will answer most of your questions about EOS Flash units. The 580 EX will work as a slave with the ST-E2 on all bodies. As Buckster advised it also works with certain new bodies.

Thanks guys,i'll have a look now. my Cameras a 500D,a Rebel T1i in the states i think.
But I dont think the camera supports anything that would work wireless. except with the transmitters ect.
