Just put my big boy pants on with a new Canon 6D. Had a canon T3i for a good 2 years now, and I bought a bunch of stuff or it. Upsetting to know the lenses won't all work on the new full frame camera. My question is how do I know if it will or won't work for my new 6D? I have a 3rd party lens (Tokina 80mm-400mm) that I rather keep than sell. How do I know what lenses will/will not work with my new 6D?

Yes, but that doesn't help for 3rd party lenses because they don't use Canon nomenclature.

I don't know off the top of my head, but other companies likely have their own code for which lenses are suitable for full frame and which are made for APS-C (Rebel etc.).

It seems that Tokina uses the same code as Nikon, for full or crop frame.

FX: Full frame
DX: Digital (cropped frame)

I don't see that your lens has either of those in the name, but after a bit of digging, it appears that it is designed for film/full frame, so it should work on a 6D.
And even if it wasn't, you could probably still use it, except that at the wide end of the zoom, you would see a circular vignette.

Thanks for all the supportive answers, bad news is my apartment just burned down 2 hours ago and all of my old equipment is lost, only thing I have now is the 6D in the mail tomorrow and the kit lens it comes with, so argument over but I will pay attention in the future at those notations

For Sigma lens, my understanding is that "DG" lens will work on FF cameras, but "DC" lens will not.
