Canon AE-1 Program film advance problem

Hi guys haw are you all.
Recently i purchased a Canon AE-1 program, the camera seems to work nice i general.
I use 35mm film with 36 exposures, but every time the camera goes to the 20th exposure
it doesn't allow me to advance the film normally. I used force once but i ripped the film
has anyone experienced anything similar ?
