Can anyone please tell me why!
When I am shooting in the advanced modes - all from A-dept to P - I have to press the button twice to open and then close the shutter . When I use live view I only need to press once.

maybe you have the shutter set to bulb

Is your mirror lock custom function activated?

That's what I'm thinking.

Check your custom functions, or just reset it to the factory defaults.

When you press the shutter button the first time, does the viewfinder black out?

no it does not - only on the second click - have reset and it is still doing the same.

Is your mirror lock custom function activated?
Where will I see if this is activated??
It would be in the custom functions menu (check the manual). If the viewfinder is not blacking out on the first press, it is not mirror lock up though.

Not really sure what else it could be...

Does it do it in auto (green box) mode? I'm pretty sure auto ignores all custom functions. If it still does it in auto, it's not a custom function.

Hoooray - and THANK YOU - 3 very frustrating months and that is exactly what it was. Now I have some studying to do.............

So, it was mirror lock up? It worked normally in auto?

Check the manual to find out which custom function it is (they're usually just numbered in the camera menu - no descriptions) and turn it off.

on my 30D it is custom function 12. not sure if it's the same, but you can scroll through the custom functions and it will be labled "Mirror lockup".

Just one more bit of advice please - I have upgraded my membership to be able to post pics on the forum for c&c - do I still need a url address to post the pics from?

You should be able to post them as attachments.

Not sure exactly how it works (never been a paying member), but there should be an 'add attachment' button somewhere on the reply box.
