I have been looking at Canon EOS 200D. I would like a telephoto lens. Looking at an Amazon website, the ES is £184 and the RF is £648.

That is a masive diffence and not very afordable. I have seen that the ES does not perfore as well with the mirrorless cameras. What does this mean? Do I have to spend £648 on a RF lens?

Thanks.

You have an EFS lens mount so any EFS/EF lens will fit on your camera. RF lenses are the mirrorless mount for Canon and are not compatible with EFS mount cameras.

IOW, dont spend £648. Wont fit your camera.

I switched over to RF lenses a year ago and noticed a big difference, especially with the autofocus and sharpness. But I still keep a few EF lenses for specific shots using the adapter. If you're into 360 or action-style content, insta360.com has some cool gear that works well alongside traditional setups, especially for creative angles or behind-the-scenes stuff.

You don't say which lens is which price, so we actually have no idea if you're comparing apples to apples, or apples to shoes. There are very good EF/EFS lenses out there and there are mediocre lenses out there, so comparing a mediocre EF lens to a higher-quality RF lens is not meaningful.

You have to be very careful when shopping for affordable quality EF/EFS lens. There are some great ones and some really bad ones. A stellar zoom lens is the Canon EFS 55-250mm STM which can be had for $100 used. A stellar mid zoom is the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Lens which is about $200 used.

See lens reviews by Christopher Frost on Youtube. He is the goto on evaluating Canon EF/EFS lens.
RF is not superior to EF/EFS lens. Consider the Canon L line of EF lenses which start at $1,000 to $5,000.

The Canon EOS 200D is a crop sensor SLR camera and will only take lenses for the EF or RF-S mount. The RF mount lenses will not fit on the 200D.
