I was going to buy a Nikon D700. But it and 2 decent lenses cost $7100.
I settled for used Pentax equipment and lenses from ebay. One 12 mp body and 2 lenses (similar to the Nikon $7100 package focal length lenses) cost me $1200. Since Pentax is such a good deal, I also bought 2 more bodies (10 and 12 mp) for $550 and a few more Pentax lenses.
I used to use Nikon film cameras back in the 80's (Had 3 F's and 3 Nikonos) and always had good luck with them. The one Canon camera I had, while producing great photos, broke on me. So, my experience is limited with Canon. But I can say the Canon did not out perform the Nikon - nor did Nikon outperform the Canon.
If you go to Photozone, you can read many reviews of the lenses and gear. That may help you decide what to buy.
But if I ever hit the lotto...I would go with Nikon.
