Is it possible to take photos while using the lcd to view what your looking at? Or do you have to use the finder?

Yes it is. If you go into the menu, look for the feature called "Live View", and switch it to on. After that when your taking a picture just press the set button to switch it on and off.

There are sometimes issues using live view with the focusing. It can be handy at times, specially when you are taking photos low down or at odd angles and can't get your eye to the viewfinder.
