My daughter has a Canon S3-is which has been a pain ever since I purchased it for her as a gift. When you are taking pictures outside, they turn out too light. They are also grainy looking. I had sent questions to Canon tech support but the answer did not work, which was to remove batteries and card, leave out 20 minutes, which I left out over night. Replaced them the next morning and the same thing with the camera. I had reset it back to factory settings but this did not help either. Does anyone have a suggestion for me on this problem? Thank you for your time.

Take it off Auto and use P instead, It's still full auto but allows modification of settings, Once in P mode chage the ISO from Auto to something appropriate for shooting outdoors ISO 100, ISO 200

Yeah sounds like the ISO is too high. ISO makes your camera more sensitive to light, but it also makes it grainy if too high (800 and up).
Check your manual how to change ISO and take off the auto ISO like rephargotohp said.

Do you have an Exposure Compensation set in it? I'd be willing to guess that's your culprit
