Canon SLR Crew: Need a new rig

Also, I thought the new canons had pocket wizard triggers built into them ?

I don't think it does. Could be wrong but I don't see any mention of it on canon's website.[/QUOTE]

You know what... I'm in the right state but not in the right ballpark. The cameras don't have pocket wizard transmitters built into them... The Speedlights have receivers built in... right?

Isn't the 1D a lot more rugged than the 5D. Maybe a little better for hostile weather environments, humidity, etc? Or are they about the same?

Cause if the 1D works better in low light, is more tolerant to hostile heat and humidity... Maybe that is the right way to go? Though I remember doing a shoot once in a nightclub for "Large Beautiful Women and the Men That Love Them." There was no A/C, it was 100+ degrees and needless to say, a lot of body heat and humidity.
-- I couldn't shoot because my lens kept fogging up.

Better high ISO performance.
Even so, I just can't get behind spending over half of his absolute max budget on a body. If low light is that important get a couple speed lights and soft boxes. Or switch to Nikon

To be honest, I think I'd rather use nat light.
I won't switch to Nikon cause I still have a lot of Canon glass and Canon feels familiar.

But if the 5dIII handles low light almost as well as the 1Dx and is equally rugged.. Than the 5D makes equal sense. I don't need high FPS.

Fair play mate. But there are times that flash photography can be very intrusive in a way that high ISOs are not. Personally speaking I'd rather have a 1Dx than another couple of lenses given the glass the op already has and a 24-70mm f2.8. But that's s personal choice and it wouldn't be eveyones. The 1DX is a big weighty camera too, it can hurt your wrists if you are not used to shooting with it and I'm pretty sure that would slso be a deal breaker for some. But as far as canon goes it's pretty much the best you can buy as far as image quality, would likely last years and is in budget. It also performs excellently in some very difficult conditions and can produce useable images way above iso 6400.

The 1DX has slightly better weather sealing than the 5Dmkiii, but performs really well in low light. Don't get me wrong the 5Dmkii would be an excellent choice as well.

Went to the store yesterday to play around with the 5DIII and 1Dx. Salesperson told me the demo 1Dx was being repaired. I asked if I could see a pre-owned one.
"We don't have any pre-owned 1Dx.. We never get pre-owned current models"
I pointed to the one sitting in the case.
"Oh, wow, I never see these in pre-owned... And it only has 30,000 snaps.."

Long story short, it was a 5DIII for regular retail or a slightly pre-owned 1Dx for $4000 (no tax).
The 1dx was super clean. I figured for $1500, it was worth it. Outfitted with a 24-70 2.8L and a 550 speedlite.

Thanks everyone... I appreciate the advice.

To be honest, I don't know enough about the pre-owned market to know if it was a good deal or not. But it came with warranty, was half between the cost of the two cameras and I got to give my business to a local merchant. He also threw in a 65g SD card, UV filter, SD card reader and neck strap.. So I'm happy.. The camera is nothing less than amazing.

Truth. The 5DIII has never let me down as far as burst fire is concerned.

Truth is.. I went 1dx for the better low light capabilities and weather sealing. Had I not found that deal though, I would have gone 5dIII.

I don't know used 1DX prices either, even used is way above my budget. I do know it's a good model for sports with the AF and fps

Interesting. So you think I'm better off with the 5DIII rather than the 5DS R? I just assumed the 5DS R was everything the 5DIII was but newer and better?

In terms of "low light" -- How low is low? If I haven't purchased a new camera body since 2006, I would assume that the range of 800-1600 is vastly greater than it was on the 40D.. No?

So the 5DIII is better for low light and video? But they are both weather sealed?

How do they handle high heat? Do they get hot and shut down like an iphone?

There is no question that the 5ds r is NOT the next iteration of the 5d mk III (Canon highlights this on the Canon site). It is a specialist camera that is most suited for landscape and portrait shots. Based on the rumor mill the 5d mk IV isn't coming until 2016 so if you're looking for an all around 5d series body your only option in the near future is the 5d mkIII.
