Ok so I am sure that this question has been asked a million times before but being that the search function is showing me answers with tons of other cameras brands as well as any post with the same words in it....

What lens is the best lens for portrait photography for a beginner who is shooting with a Canon...something that is affordable and won't break the bank...around $100 to $175?

I'm a total noob, but I think your price range is going to dramatically limit your options. I have to 50mm f/1.8 that I like. I think they're going for around $150 or so. It is nice and clear, but it has no zoom so you have to pay particular attention to your composition.

50mm f/1.8 is what you want. If you pay more than $100 you're getting ripped off. It's a great lens and is just what you described.

I just got the nifty-fifty...still practidsing, but that'll be the only thing in your price range, i think. It's a nice sharp lens, though. I'm enjoying mine. :)

That's about your only choice unless you can find any other 3rd part primes out there. There's not many options for that price range. Now if you can save $300-$400, you'll have a lot better option. The 50 f/1.8 is a great buy, but the lens itself is nothing special.

Actually, the build quailty of the Canon 50 mm f/1.8 II is so low quality, I find it really hard to recommend the lens.

Another thing they really cheaped out on was the aperture blades. There are only 5 of them, they are straight, have sharp edges, and they give a horrible looking, CoC (Circle of Confusion) effect when shallow DOF is used to produce a selective focus effect.

55-250mm.. use it outdoor though.
