here is a portrait i took of my cat the other day

shot at f1.8 50mm

From the looks of the ears and side of the head, I think you needed to go 1 stop higher. The DOF is to short.
 
Beautiful cat. The only thing I would try differently, is with a more bland background (or more, just 1 colour, maybe something to bring out the colours of the eyes), as the different colours take the eye away from the main focus, which is obviously your cat.
 
The sooner you get over the novelty of having f1.8 available and realise that it's very seldom ideal, the better. At least you got the focus right on the eyes though. You could try desaturating the background too, it's pretty bright and distracting, despite being blurred nicely.
