I'm guessing it means he shot this on a Polaroid camera.

and what I mean by that is that your pp ruined a great capture.

in lr5 I set the highlites slider to 100% because the feather detail was blown out......if I had selected parts of the bird I may have prevented the grey you so astutely noticed

So it's worth the feathers not to be blown out so that the rest of the image can look really bad? Honestly, I spent a good 2 minutes in LR and was able to make the image look MUCH better: the feathers white, with all the detail still there and water that still looks like water. What you posted currently looks like a picture taken in 1970 and sat in direct sunlight for the last 30 years and you scanned it and uploaded it without any correction. You did more than just pull the highlight slider down to -100%.
