The aperture on my camera can be changed from f/8 to f/2.7. The shutter speed can be from from 30 seconds down to "2000", I cant remember exactly what that number is, I just know it's really fast. 
You probably know, though. I've only read the manual once, and I normally have to read these things a few times before they sink in. Then, lots of practice!
When I was taking the picture:
There was all sorts of the little flowers everywhere. I was looking for nice ones.
Then I saw the ones under the tree, between some roots.
"cute" I thought.
I wondered if I could get both the tree and the flowers in the same frame, for the contrast of the big, long-lived tree and the small, new flowers that wont last more than a week or two. I didn't think "caring tree", but I wonder what the picture would look like if I went back with that in mind....
And that was about it.
