I currently have the following setup. Nikon D90 w/ Nikon 35mm 1.8, Nikon 50mm 1.8, Tamron 70-300 4-5.6 VC, Nikon Kit lens 18-105mm 3.5-5.6.
I am looking at getting a Nikon D610 and wondering what lenses I can go with to start that will work for a FX sensor.
I ultimately would love to get the trifecta lens setup which include the Nikon 14-24mm 2.8, Nikon 24-70mm 2.8, and 70-200mm 2.8. This all together would cost me a fortune to get at once.

With that said, I'm wondering what the best inexpensive lenses I can go with would be that would be around a f/1.8-3.5 range with nothing past f/3.5. I would like to start with a lens 17mm or lower for a FX setting unlike the 17-50 tamron which is 24mm on a FX sensor.

Hopefully I explain well enough what I'm looking at. I understand lenses are still probably going to be in the $500 range for decent quality.

What is your budget, realistically?

What is your projected time frame for acquiring new lenses?

Technically, even a lens that is designed for DX will function on an FX (with some vignetting). Just crop off the edges.

If you want lower than 17mm then expect to pay top dollar for them. I think Tamron has a 16-35 which you may want to look at.

I have this setup which does me good
18-35 / 3.5-4.5 AF-D (low cost)
24-85 / 2.8-4.0 AF-D low cost and a great range
35-70/2.8 AF-D very low cost
50/1.4 G AF-S
50/1.8 AF-D
300mm/4 AF

all the above lenses were under $500, and some half that.
I left out my > $500 lenses.
but for range the 80-200/2.8 push pull would be in your $ range.
THe two ring AF-D is above your $$ range, then the 80-200 AFS then 70-200 AFS

Is your 35mm a DX lens ?

I want to try and get away from the crop, I know you can do it and I know you can changes settings as well to act like a DX but then it goes to 10.5mp when I already have a d90 with 12mp.

Time frame.... lol well its going to be a work in progress. Depends how much business I get and taxes and savings. The D610 will be first, the lens hopefully by mid to end of winter. Then a year probably after that for the next.

I wanted to get lenses that were 2.8 because of low lighting but it seems like this camera from what I read is pretty good with low lighting on its own to which a 2.8-4 should not be an issue. Just would like lenses when zoomed to be at the 2.8. haha

I've been considering the Tamron 70-200 2.8 but cant seem to pull the trigger with hearing the quality of the nikon 2.8 lens. Also the speeds on the tamron seem slow. (always talks about the VC setting at this point which I can turn off)

what brand lenses are those that you have under the $500 range?

I have two fairly decent Nikkor lenses; the 50mm 1:1.8G and the 85mm 1:1.8G both of which I bought used, and each was less than $500.

Price vs. quality is always the conundrum.

All of my lenses are Nikon brand

What is the word on this Digitalrev.com site? I feel the prices are so much different that you are buying a knock off branded lens/body. Anyone know the situation here? Reason I ask is that I can by the Tamron 28-75 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 for $1000. Does not sound right at all.

I'm also now looking at the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8. You can get them for $500 new.

Try to find a local / regional place to buy a lens.
DigitalRev I believe is based out of Hong Kong ??
They have funny camera-based videos but their prices are high.

adorama.com
b&h
etc all have street prices for products.

I can get a 28-75mm 2.8 for $200 used locally right now. Not sure if this lens is worth getting or if I should find something around the 10-24mm 3.5-4.5mm as it would be a 16-37mm on a Full Frame. The 28-75 would be 43-116mm.

Never mind on the 10-24 as its not designed for full frame so I'd have to crop or setup for the 10.5mp DX setting.
I feel I need a wide lens first for the full frame as the other lenses will work on the d610 without crop/dx formate. (aside from the 18-105mm)

Maybe I'm thinking this wrong. I thought with a Full Frame sensor, the image would be wider than with a DX sensor. Doesn't it take wider photos with a Full Frame?

Hello Yamba6,
Changing from DX to FX introduces a 1.5x to the focal length. eg a 10mm on crop would be a 15mm on FF for the same lens.
However most of the lenses I bought for my DX body weren't really usable on my FF body without a terrible amount of vignetting.
When I upgraded from D7000 to D600 then the only lens I had was the 50 1.8 which works fine on FF. It actually forced me to try the whole "one lens" challenge and helped me greatly in my photography life.
If you're looking for good glass at relatively cheap prices, then I went down the 35-70 2.8 AFD and 80-200 2.8 AFD v1 route. Both can be had for £150 / £300 respectively. Then something like the 24mm AFD or the 17-35 AFS 2.8 are good wide angle options. Of course if you can find it the 28-70 2.8 is brilliant as well.

I hope this helps

I found the site Lenshero.com which definitely informed me better of which lenses would work on the D610. I know my Tamron 70-300 VC will work, I have the 35mm 1.8 ($200 lens) and the 50mm 1.8 ($109) that I know will work as well. The only one right now is the 18-105 which I will gladly purchase a wide angle lens next.
I know the 28-75mm 2.8 tamron works on the D610 at 28-75 FF and Higher on my D90 which is going to be used for a short time.
I talked it out with the local guy to purchase that lens for $200 used (apparently in great shape with no lens hood) I cant find this lens for under $350 used right now.

I used the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 for awhile moving from D90 to D600 with it. Great lens and currently for sale ;-)

Great lens for the price. Really. I upgraded to the 24-70 for the wider end and VC. I also have the Tamron 70-200 non-vc and get great results with it. Plenty sharp for me and picked it up for ~$550. Little slow to focus and no VC but I get by lol.

The 35mm 1.8 will work in Crop mode. The D600 will recognize it and start acting like a crop sensor cmaera.
So effictively it will be the 50mm you already have. Dump the 35mm and reinvest it.
