Charging for amateur portraits..

Thanks rehab and jeweler... What would be good starter flash? Around 150 maybe? I have an old Maxwell PF-70T bounce flash, theres no way of using that- is there?

Thanks for the tips guys. Any basic flashes for around 150?

Portraiture is showing the likeness of your subject. To show this effectively, you need to understand lighting, posing and good communication with your subject. In a studio setting, gear takes a back seat. Lighting is paramount. There are four ingredients to this soup that you need to clearly understand. Ambient, Key, Fill and Accent. Salt to taste. (I got that from David Hobby) That's why lighting with only one light is so taxing..... it has to play the role of three lights. Ambient is ambient.

There are a multitude of ways to get from point A to point B. One light may not "make" you or "break" you, but it's a damn good starting point.

There are a couple brands of inexpensive flash people repeatedly recommend.

Search the forum for "cheap flash" while you wait for answers.
There's one that starts with a Y, yungsomething. I dunno, I bought canon. *shrugs*

Also, cactus triggers or cowboy studio triggers, for off camera work.
Somebody will surely be along shortly to get this all straight. :D

YN460 is one of them. I had mine for 3 hours before it broke but it seems to have great reviews from a lot of other people.

You're right! The Pentax had too much awesome for it to handle. I guess you can only use them on Canons.

You don't need TTL as a feature on a flash. Vivatar, Metz, Sunpack, YoMoma, none of that matters, cause any third party flash can work if it mates to you camera brand for hotshoe mounting. OCF only needs a transmitter and receivers. Some better than others. I would look for tilt/swivel head, GN, optical slave, stop down settings, etc.

Kelby training have a great DVD by Joe McNally on shooting great portraits with only one flash. ( and some diffusers/reflectors which you can pick up from fleabay for next to nothing)
It's worth checking out.
