I think your method is much better. Isolates the subject from the background and personally I think that is important in most macro shots.

There is no right or wrong...this is ART, after all.

What was your purpose for the photos? Using a shallow DOF gives them an artistic feel. However, these shots look like they are showcasing the subject, like a 'product shot'...in which case, it would probably be better to have the entire object in focus.

Personally, I like the ones with more DOF (the lower ones).

I like pic 4! it makes you focus on the empty-ness of the shell (kinda telling a little story)
