Feedback / CC would be much appreciated. I like a lot about #1, but I feel like I could have moved more background distractions out of the way.

Yes, I agree about distractions.
In both of them the faces are under-edited, imo.

I think in the first you are too close and there is no context

Depends what you are after. If you want a finished look, remove the lamp in the first, otherwise it is still an interesting documentary portrait.

Overall, the photos are amazing!! I agree a little touching up on the faces and the light post in the first phot can be removed in photoshop. Otherwise, these are great!

I like their gaze in these pictures! The woman looks almost saddened, wary...overall it's great! I agree with the removing of the lightpost for the best effect...
