Concert Pics - Day1

Well, the day has come. Bottle Rock in Napa. Day 1 is over with, and here are a just a few to get the thread going. I went to Black Crows, Café Tacuba, Avett Brothers, and Primus. Standard, 3 first songs apply to the media and then you get kicked out of the pit. Tonight will be sick! -another great lineup. I will upload a few at a time until the festival is over and Ive had time to process them all. Ive got to say, its a lot of fun!

Love #2 and 5. Are you using a 70-200 or are you really close?

70-200 for most, I snapped close to 600 pics last night, 80% were with 70-200. and not all were at 200...I was pretty close, but I found that the big stage was a little too far away to utilize the 24-70. and the small stage too close to use the 70-200 at 200. Cafe Tacuba is pretty crazy. A latin band -Reggae-ish -lots of energy on stage.

Compositionally, there's way too much dead space at the top of all of them. #2 almost works, but still isn't making it for me.

Cutting off things like hands, guitar headstocks and the like can take an otherwise great shot and mitigate it into mediocrity. For example, look at shot #3; the photo of the guy playing the Martin (I'm guessing that's The Avett Brothers). If you'd have included that one little corner of the headstock, and not left so much empty space above his head, that would've been a stellar photo.

Exposre-wise, and emotion-wise, I think these are great (I'm still a little undecided about the cello picture). Dial in that composition, and you're going to be producing some great stuff...

Yeah I knew someone would comment on the little bit of guitar getting lopped off. -pisses me off too. I will continue to work on getting everything in the frame. -its tough, as im sure you know, when your in the heat of the moment in the pit -getting bumped around and competing for a great shot. But, my goal, is to get a great one by the end of the event I have tons more... maybe one will be spot on. I have to go through them all. -also, it sucks because the main stage is higher up than I anticipated. There is a step stool type barricade on our side of the fence, but I cant stand there for long...
So its either too much space on top, or bottom, -unless they come forward on stage, -which is entirely up to them...

So, Im thinking I need to zoom out a little bit (just a hair) and not worry about getting in so close with the lens. That way I can get the right crop in post. -that would alleviate any issues with amputations right off the bat.

Man, I love these all! I think you're right on in that post ^ zoom out a little and then crop. Otherwise, everything looks aweesome. When I opened this and saw #1, it definitely set the stage for how the rest were going to be good. Nailed it, dude. Can't wait to see the next set!

Yeah, you wouldn't have to do much. Sucks about the height of the stage, though...
