Hey guys, the title says it. I'm Dutch and yes, i'm cheap. :greenpbl:

Alright so I have been wanting to buy a portrait lens but also i want a wide angle for cool looking shots with bent edges (if you know what I mean).
So instead of dropping $500.00 on a sigma 10-20, or something else. I thought about a wide angle converter. Now I have looked a few online and what not and cannot decide what is good, bad, and just plain UGH!
I just want a cool looking wide angle attachment, I only have my kit lens I use right now because my 200mm telephoto isn't really up for portraits, or wide angled shots.
So can anybody relate or recommend me a converter of any kind?
Thanks in advance.

The problem with the generic converters is they are made generic. They are not designed to fit this lens or that. Just on filter size. There was someone on here not too long ago asking for help with their. The adaptors were blocking the shot, hard vignetting. Because the adaptor were not designed to work with their lens, the adaptor actually was blocking alot of the frame. So instead of getting a wider shot. They got a paperweight. You will notice alot of cheap wide angle adaptors are the same width as the mounting thread size, ie a straight tube. But if you look at wide angle adaptors that are specifically made for a lens. They flare out to a much larger element thats in front. Like a Nikon WC-E63 mdae for a cool pix (just an example). The adaptor may have worked with video camera's which were the original designs for them. But for a true photography lens, they do not work!!

Thanks for the replies guys. So i'm just going to have to buy the siggy 10-20?

You may have to wait some. But it will be worth it. And the money you save from not buying a cheap adaptor means your that much closer to getting a good lens! You might be able to find the older slower Siggys for a decent price used.

True I guess it just sucks because I have no fast glass. I had a 35mm 1.8 but I had to return it to help my parents out. Sucks but whatever it had to be done.
Now i'm just looking for some fast wide angle or something. I love the look of wide angle glass. Can't afford it though.

You could always look at the siggy 8-16mm! Even more wide angle goodness there!

The other option is tripod and stitching the photos together from your kit lens. Though you'll want a decent tripod and (to do it well) you'll have to read up about nodal points and use a set of focusing rails so that the camera is moving around the nodal point (which greatly helps with getting the shots so that they'll stitch together well).

A fast wide angle is going to be expensive.

If you are nikon, id recommend looking at some older primes, maybe a 20 or 24mm f2.8. I have used the 24mm and enjoyed it very much. keep in mind they will not meter or autofocus unless you have a d90 or above.
