So today my boss asked me to take a glamour macro photo of a component so he can use it to put in a presentation that he is doing "as a favor" for his boss.

i ended up borrowing a 60D from a co-worker to use it with a 100mm F2.8 EF macro lens that's already in the photo studio and pumped out some neat shots. Seriously, who asks for favor to do others a favor? That's not a favor, that's obviously a suck up! So did I suck up to my boss so he can suck up to his boss? Well, I did get to spend an hour away from my desk and be left alone. That can be a golden reward in certain circumstances.

Anyways, this makes me want to get a Nikkon 105mm F2.8 Micro, but I just don't have enough use for it. Need more bugs!

Why would he care as long as he gets what he wants?

Well, I am the go-to photo guy in the office. Another department owns a small photo studio and they have 2 Canon lens, one of which is the macro lens (they have a really old Kodak Canon mount DSLR). I use Nikon and I don't have a macro lens, so I borrowed my co-worker's Canon to use it with the macro that is available.

well, he was the one who "loaned" the two lens for his vacation trip and I had to tell him to bring them back!

I've been there, done that, with both good & bad feelings/results. I think that it all depends on the level of respect that you have for the person (or position) that you are doing the favour for. If you respect them - it's helping them out, and it feels good. But, if you don't respect them, it feels false, and therefore it feels like you are sucking up.

Sounds to me like you aren't feeling very warm & fuzzy about where you are working, and it's making you jaded............

Actually, the macro part is nice because I haven't taken many macro shots before. It's just that the intention is so..... predictable. Am I bitter? Not really, just think it's sad that some people make a career out of it.

Of course crappier stuffs have happened before, and will happen again. Everyday is a new high/low depending on how you look at it.

So i guess if I were to categorize the types of jobs in a corporate system, there's those who sustain it by keeping its "demand" high and there's those who sustain it by damage control. Both are valid career paths and they need each other.

I do completely agree with your categories of the types of jobs in a corporate system, even though I don't work in the same industry as you. Very very true!
