Corrupt Raw Shots w/Good JPG Previews: Bad Camera or Bad Card?

I shot a bunch of photos in RAW using a Canon 200D, and while the JPG previews are fine, the RAW shots are corrupted. Is the most likely cause the camera or the cards?

Only thing to do now is to format a different card and try some shots with the camera set the same way you had it. If the files are still corrupt then it is probably a problem with your camera or software. Do you have any other software that can read your RAW files?

The files look crazy in at least two programs. It's not the end of the world, since the JPG's are pretty big.

A web source says I should format cards IN THE CAMERAS IN WHICH I USE THEM. I wonder if that makes a difference.

For years I never worried about formatting a card in camera vs computer, or deleting files on computer vs camera. Then one time it happened, corrupted files. I should also add that I didn't notice while shooting, that my camera battery was getting very low.

Fortunately for me I use Lexar cards, they have a free data recovery tool Downloads | Lexar Rather than losing everything I only lost a few images. You don't say what brand cards you're using, but I'd check the manufactures site.

As to now, I still delete files from the card at the computer, but I format the card in camera before I start shooting again, and keep a closer eye on my battery power.

I read an opinion many years ago that you should always format a card in the camera that the card goes into, and that's what I have done ever since. I have never had a problem. I rarely need to switch a card from one camera to another, but when I do, I format the card again, just to be sure.

The messed-up shots were all taken with a Canon 200D. I haven't gone through them to see if they all used the same card. I am going to try to read them directly from the card, using the same reader. If they look okay, I'll see if I can redo the card-to-PC transfer for the bad pictures.

Maybe the computer started doing something during the transfers.

I just read that some card readers are better than others. I thought they were just USB cables with adaptors on the ends. Has anyone here found a reliable brand for a good price?

I bought a brand I had really never heard of as I needed something to read the CF Express cards as well as my SD card. It works great and reads both. Plus transfer rates are very quick.

I just read that some card readers are better than others.

I just plug them into the SD card reader slot in my laptop.

Canon formats the SDSC cards in exFAT. If you format the cards outside of the camera, you need to use this card digital storage format. Hence, I always format the cards using the camera's utility.

I always format my cards in my Pentax. It is easy enough, and is a simple precaution.

It looks like I should have separate cards for Canon and Sony.

my guess will be bad sectors. the raws are big enough that they might hit one. replace it.

i used the same card in a canon and in a pentax with no problems. they both save in the dcim folder in different sub-folders. i used it with a mini card reader as a flash drive for years with no problems. if you leave the cameras folder structure intact it can be used anywhere.
