Countryside Engagement Session

I shot an engagement session this past autumn and I finally just posted a blog up for it. I'll post two photos here, the rest are on the link below. Nothing overwhelmingly creative here, but my clients were super stoked on the photos. I flew to Laguna Beach, CA two weeks ago to shoot their wedding. As always, C&C is welcome and would love to answer any technical questions you may have.

#1, I could live without the dutch tilt.
#2, The foreground is distracting, not creative, IMHO.
#3, seems to work.
#4, is a bit high on the creep meter.

Glad they were super stoked.

I don't like the tilt in 1.

I REALLY want to move those flowers/branches in 2.

I don't like this one at all. That is I guess some type of fish eye effect/lens. To me there is a time and a place, and this was not it.

Her smile looks forced, but id say good skin tones.

Thanks for the replies. It's funny, the things you guys don't like are some of the things my clients complement me on the most but that's what makes everyone unique, we all have different tastes apparently!

^ Exactly. So apparently you knew your clients well enough, and asked enough questions to know what they liked. In the end they are the ones who paid you, which is what counts the most.

I really like #3, just as a fine art image. #2, I just keep going back to that big yellow blob.
The thing about tilted portraits is that they are a trend and everybody does it with the results being they rarely work. There's not enough interest to make it work here either, but I'm not paying for them so what I like means squat.

Interesting, they are from CO but got married in Laguna Beach? I ran into a guy proposing on the beach there last fall, he was from CO. Same guy?

@LouR I'm not a big fan of the tilted image as well, I just did it to try and highlight as many of the flowers in the shot as possible. In the rest of the photos (on my blog listed there) I have a lot more variety of shots.

@spacefuzz No these guys are from California, I moved to Colorado recently and flew back to shoot their wedding. Would be quite a coincidence though.

I like it.

If you had a habit of tilting your work I would advise against it. However, once in a while to keep things interesting. Why not? Nice work. I would love to be able to pull off those kinds of shots.

There is one that bothers me but only the B&W shot.

The thing about engagement photos is that not a lot of people look at the "photography" end of it. The most important perspective is that of the couple and I think you captured them well with great expressions and you can see their love for each other through your photography

As for Flowers in or out, branches, tilt/dont tilt etc... its all individual artistic impression. Had you not tilted it, someone would say you should have tilted it it. Ignore all that.
These are photos this couple will frame and hang for many years. Be proud. They're great photos!

So in #3 the couple are so small in the frame they are almost irrelevant.

I think you did a great job, quality portraits here. I checked out the HR versions of this shoot on your website and overall, these are damn good picks from the load., im pretty they are more than happy with their shots. Id say better than the 80% of what is regularly posted on here.
