What's new

couple fun shots of the new pup

A fox and vermin can't do as much damage as a boar. If you sent your dog after a boar, and the boar got a hold of his ears, he'd likely bleed out before you could get him to a vet.

Protection work, there is two reasons. 1) Ear cropping allows a dog to locate the source of a sound with much higher accuracy than a dog with folded ears. 2) Again, if an intruder has an ear to get ahold of, he can do serious damage to the dog, rendering not only the dog in excruciating pain, but leaving him ineffective at his job with the house unproctected.

Did you not read the blurb from the AKC that I posted? They do indeed say that if a dog's ears do not conform to the standard 'down', they should be cropped. Unless you don't want to be competitive, in which case do as you please.

The only reason he had them chopped off was for looks, you would not be allowed to do that over here thankfully

In this case yes. I'll agree with you that it has become mostly for looks. However, the tradition of cropping ears started in Europe, and it got taken into the Americas when the dogs were being imported. We try to stand by the original look of the dog, however right or wrong that may be.

If the dog were to be extensively trained in French Ring or Schutzhund (protection work), or was to actually be used in boar hunting, would your opinion be different? Just curious.

For future reference, dogs that have their ears cropped are not necessarily going to be used for fighting. I do not condone any kind of animal fighting sports, at all, ever. But that is not where this practice began. Ignorance with a mouth never looks good on anyone.

Here's a picture of my killer pitbull you guys have banned... (for presumably human aggression, which if any actual fighting dog exhibited signs of human aggression he would be euthed on the spot. They are known for animal aggression, shockingly in the same family as your lovely dog... terriers. They are all tenacious, all stubborn, all one of the most fun and most difficult dogs to train.) Look out! He's a mean one! *snerk*

I remember a documentary about how easy it is to get a pitbull into the UK, even with the ban.

They went out and purchased a proven fighting stud, had actually fought and won multiple times in the ring.

The went to get him... his tail was wagging so fast you could hardly see it. They walked him up and down the streets in a major metropolitan area, he was licking people hands as they walked by. Would he ever be safe around other dogs? Likely not, but that is manageable, so long as everyone follows the rules and keeps their critters on a leash. My tiny little 20lb Cocker is VERY dog aggressive. My Springer doesn't like kids. My mutt doesn't give a rip but is hyper active. The pitbull? Best dog I've got.

ETA: I remember too, the narrator was trying to make this dog seem all grisly and dangerous. "This dog is a proven killer, yadda yadda" and this dog is SO EXCITED to meet new people. Poor guy, wonder what kind of dog he'd be without that terrible start.

Mine hates big dogs a rot came for him on the park a bout 2 months ago don't think the rot will try it again, he dosn't go for other dogs but if they start he's up for it

Terriers are definitely known for that. They generally work alone, it's what they were bred to do. Any other animal is either a) something to kill or b) in the way. It sucks that pitbulls have so much power behind what they do. I won't ever deny their capability for destruction, they are fast and VERY powerful. With responsible owners, they make fantastic dogs though.

i'm glad you know the reasons i had his ears cropped. you have no idea why i had his ears cropped, i never said it was for solely for appearance purposes now did i?

you have no clue what im using this dog for, or anything. you strictly made a demeaning statement about dog fighting, which frankly, has made any opinion you make from there out of no concern to me whatsoever. you've already showed you're ignorance.

this. and everything else.

Guys get back to the topic of the pictures and leave the debate on conformities alone.

If you want to debate this topic please use the offtopic subsection and start a discussion up about it (I was going to simply split the thread, but without any leading opening argument/presentation I've nothing to start a separate thread with to allow continuation of the debating aspect).

thanks. i only posted pictures for that purpose, however, i wasn't going to let the issue rest about the dog fighting without addressing it b/c i feel strongly about that subject. that's it from me on the matter.
