Cropping conundrum - advice?

I like the sky.. LOL.. I wouldnt get rid of it. I guess the way I like it will need you to reshoot.

I think I'd like it the way you mentioned, too, but it's not too close to my homes and it likely won't be foggy the next time I'm down there. So I've decided to keep it as my last crop. :)

Thanks to everyone who gave their opinion.

I see the potential for a series here Abby. Go out in nature & look for more natural "frames" to insert your "face". Could be a fun project for you.

Fun idea, Ron! I'm working on a few other portraits... I could use them too! Semester break is coming up, and I was planning to make a pinhole camera, but now maybe I'll do this instead. Or both. :D

You drew that face? I know I can't see it as well as it deserves, but from what I can tell that is an incredible drawing - would love to see it in better detail.

Yep, I can draw ok. :)

The picture of the drawing that I used in the photo, probably should have taken a straighter one but I didn't take it with this in mind and since it turned out ok I saw no reason to take another.

Very nice work, thank you for posting it - you definitely have some talent there, I'm envious.

The fact that you used what looks like a cute kid's face is weird to me. It makes me think of the ghost of a child or something, and it's a little disturbing, giving sad feelings. Now if you were going for that 'feeling' I understand, just thought it was worth mentioning.

I like the original with a little bit less sky.

EDIT: Wow, you have incredible drawing skill.. I think art school is perfect for you.

Yep, ghostly was my plan. Goes with the whole "mysterious" theme.

Thank you both for the kind words. Art is actually second to my animal science major. I would have gotten a minor, but my school doesnt offer minors in that particular field. :grumpy:

This thread has suddenly reminded me of a flight I had on assignment flying from Newfoundland to Labrador, sitting next to a sweet young thing working on two graduate degrees.

Me, being a terrestrial boy, I could not understand what I was seeing out the aircraft window below; she looked & said "they are icebergs".

If I might offer a bit of advice without offending thee M'lady. Me words come with a grain of salt. Trees most often have an anchor point. The problem becomes framing. At times , it's better to lose a bit of the top, or the side, than to sacrifice the anchor points. Paint the layer in after, it would have been stunning. There's always next time.

No offense taken, ever. Say what you've gotta say. :)

So, anchor points... I don't think I'm following what you mean. I can easily do this again later (and probably will), so I'd like to understand.

Ok, so was Ron sitting next to you on a plane or was that another girl working on 2 degrees and probably drawing a nice picture?
