I found a Nikon D40x & original lens on ebay for $400 and went for it, so I am curious because I read a lot of reviews which say that the camera is no good because of not being compatible with a lot of lenses only these reviews were from 2007ish. Is this still true for today? How do I find out if a lens is compatible or not? Thanks

the d40x as far as i know does not have a drive motor in the camera, meanig it cannot focus lens with the screw-type system. only electronically. the body is fine if you're just going into DSLR photography, but check the lenses you want to buy to make sure they focus electronically

If you want auto-focus, you'll need to buy lenses designated "AF-S" as these have a built-in focus motor. All other Nikon-mount lenses built in the last thirty years will work, but will be manual focus and/or may require manual or stop-down metering.

Nikon AS-I lenses also will auto focus on the D40X.

Here is partial a list of the lenses that will auto focus on the Nikon D40/D40X/D60/D3000/D3100/D5000/D5100, you have to select from, Including brands other than Nikon: List of Nikon F-mount lenses with integrated autofocus motors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oh wow thank you. When I looked online all I could find was a very small list, of maybe 20 lenses. I had no idea there was that many! I'm excited now, thanks.
