D5100 - looking for a good portrait lens with good Bokeh

the bokeh on the 35mm isn't anything to write home about. the focal length is too short, and for portraiture it's not a good length as well. Maybe for full body, multi-bodies.

$$$ thanks for the info but $$$ would be the important thing. I settled and bought a 50 mm 1.8 g

I am using the 50mm on a crop sensor. I say go for the 85mm, it is the superior choice for portraits.

I was actually using the 85mm on a crop sensor...Actually a few of us in here with first hand experience with it on a crop sensor all suggested that if working space is tight lean towards the 50mm. There was no debate that the 85mm was the "superior" lens or not.

Of course, if you have no space to work with then you have to make compromises. The 50mm will provide very good portraits.

Bokeh is an aesthetic quality of how background blur looks, and is not the blur itself.

The term "bokeh" refers to the "look" of the blur, not the blur itself.

This statement gets thrown around a lot as indisputable fact, although both in the technical language of photography, as well as in the original Japanese meaning, it can be used to refer to the blur itself.

The ultimate Nikon lens for portraiture bokeh is the $5820 - Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II Telephoto Lens 2188 B&H

Truly an impressive lens. What about the defocus control (dc) series lenses? In adept hands, they can be used to great effect.
