D5100 vs T3i

I can get the T3i for about 540, while the nikon d5100 is sold out everywhere in the same price range unless I want to pay 100 dollars more to get it.

I want to be a landscape photographer, what should I get. From my research nikon d5100 has better image quality, but frm what I can gather its easier to do post -producaiton work on the t3i and also grow as a photographer with it. I am thinking long term with both cameras, with clear and beautiful outdoor, natural landscapes (nightime and daytime) as my primary focus. Considering that the nikon is sold out should I just take the plunge and go with t3i?

BTW; Live in Canada the t3i is coming with the standard 18-55 starter kit, spare battery, the accesory bag, for that 540. It doesnt mean much, just wanted to include it.

Also I know d5100 has limited video capabilities as compared to the T3i, but I dont really see myself shooting videos, but maybe I will in the future, again primary focus is images.

Yes I know I am a beginner but I am choosing something for the long term, I want to be able to produce very high quality images one day with better lenses. My condition is same! I bought 600D and am happy with it! everyday am learning something new and getting to know my cam more

If you're not already invested in lenses, get the D5100 even if you have to wait a while. I say this as a Canon guy with a 7D but the D5100 takes much better night shots than even my camera.

What you buy now may determine the system you stay with. Both Canon and Nikon can take you as far as you will ever want to go. I prefer, the way Nikon handles over any other camera maker but that's me.

It's really up to you. First thing I would suggest doing is getting your hands on each camera you are looking at. I just got a Nikon D5100 and couldn't be happier. I also got my hands on the D7000, Canon T3i, Canon T4i, and I've messed around on my Mom's T2i whenever I stop by the house.

What everyone above me has said is pretty much true.. You need to get both in your hands and see witch one you like better. Only you can make the final decision and that decision will make you a Canon or Nikon user.

I myself am a Canon girl and I did have a T3i I liked it over my friends Nikon D5100 (i believe it was) when i tried it. I felt like it was easier to learn on, and I felt like the canon was more user friendly in a way. I did like the turn out screen as well, I have pets and a niece that I take pictures of so having the screen that popped out while I was on the flood playing with her or my dog was a big help in my case.

I also invested in the glass right off the bat so that is something you might wanna look into regardless. Because that stock lens is gonna get boring fast.

I'd go for Canon t3i, I'm not a brand lover but I think Pentax K-30 and Canon t3i are strong entry level DSLR's, The D5100 lacks an autofocus motor which will be a big problem if you want old lenses to autofocus them on, plus you won't be able to use aperture ring which is present in old AF lenses but not in newer G or AF-S lenses.

Canon is more user-friendly, has a little bit expensive bodies, but way more cheaper lenses than Nikon (here in Pakistan). For instance take 50mm f1.8 which costs 9000 PKR, but The Nikon 'D' version, not 'G' will cost you something round 12000 PKR, than you can imagine the price for the 'G' version.

In my mind, you have three options, Nikon D5100, Canon T3i and Pentax K-30 or maybe Pentax K-5.
I won't buy a Nikon unless I've enough money to buy a D90 or D7000. It leaves two options for me, I personally prefer Pentax K-30 if you can get Pentax lenses easily in your area, Obviously they're more cheaper!!!

Also check out all bodies in your own hands and test how they feel before making a final purchase with your hard-earned money. And a cheap body with expensive lens is better than an expensive body with cheap glass!
