Is there any improved performance to the nikon d600 with the battery grip??

If, by 'improved performance', you mean faster frame rate, no. The only added performance bonus is having double the battery life.

plus shutter and dial controls in portrait orientation.

Plus a really cool look to get you all the ladies.

YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

The added weight and girth makes the camera more stable in a photographers hands, which has a lot to do with why pro grade DSLRs have a vertical grip built in by the factory.

It's all about the girth.

I have one for my 300 that sits in my bag 90% of the time. I shoot portraits the "wrong way" so the extra buttons don't do anything for me.

I'd say if you've bought everything else and want spend the money get one.

Don't you get tired of taking out-of-focus photos of your nose?

It makes the camera much more comfortable in portrait mode.
