Data Recovery Question, New Programs?

I found some old threads about data recovery but technology is always improving.... Does anyone know the current, best data recover program for memory cards and would I get better results sending the cards to a lab? Probably much more expensive. I would think there is a newer more effective program. So what program do I look for?

I would first contact the card manufacturer.

I have used Photorec several times. It found files that other programs couldn't find.
It is run from the command line but its pretty straight forward.
It comes bundled with Testdisc a file repair retrieval program which I have never used.
Its also free of charge.
